FLiP’s Charity of the Year: Why We Support YoungMinds

We know that divorce and separation can have long term and damaging impacts on the mental health of children and young people if it is handled badly. We strive to provide points of contact for parents to assist their children at times of need or vulnerability and YoungMinds is a charity which can provide excellent support.

Who are YoungMinds?

YoungMinds is a charity providing support and tools for children and young people’s mental health in times of crisis or at times of difficulty. YoungMinds’ mission is “for a future where all young minds are supported and empowered, whatever the challenges.”

How does YoungMinds link with our area of work?

The mental wellbeing of children is always at the forefront of our minds when dealing with the divorce or separation of couples where children are directly involved.

One of our Senior Associates, Nicole Phillips, is a member of the influential FSG Language Group which has led the “Language Matters” campaign to improve the language used for separating families.

Here at FLiP we are always mindful of the language that is being used when dealing with divorce or separation and ensure that parents also understand that solutions-focused language will promote a child’s welfare.

We also offer children who are struggling with the breakdown of their parents’ relationship, our own support page where we offer tips and guidance to make the journey an easier one. You will find external support services such as YoungMinds, linked on that page.

What are some of the resources that YoungMinds have, which FLiP think are particularly helpful?

There are some situations which can be particularly challenging for parents, including those where parents are supporting children who are struggling with gender identity. YoungMinds have a wealth of resources and tools to aid parents in supporting a child’s experience around gender identity which can ultimately affect their mental health. You can find out more here.

Another common example of an aspect of a child’s life which may be adversely affected by the separation of their parents, is transitioning to new circumstances during a time of change. YoungMinds have a whole page of resources with top tips on how to support children during such times. More information can be found here.

How do FLiP support YoungMinds?

At FLiP we may signpost parents to YoungMinds if we feel they will benefit from their support. In addition, the proceeds of any fundraising activities we run in-house go to YoungMinds.

Our most popular fundraisers to date have been our rugby sweepstake and our support campaign for YoungMinds during mental health awareness week which you can find out more about here.
