With Boris Johnson and his partner Carrie Symonds moving in together at No. 11 Downing Street, they join the 3.3 million couples currently cohabiting in the UK. It is reported that one in eight people over the age of 16 are currently cohabiting in England and Wales with half of all cohabiting couples owning property together and sharing financial assets.

The figures here highlight the fact that whilst there are a huge number of non-married cohabitants, the limited legal rights that they have ultimately result in unequal treatment in law.

Take a look back at our helpful post which discussed the rights of cohabiting couples on separation with reference to the case of Dobson v Griffey in which Family Law in Partnership’s Director, David Allison and Associate, Kara Swift represented the defendant.
