Family Law Breakfast: The rise in mental health issues in the family courts

On 31st October 2019, the Personal Support Unit will host their next Family Law Breakfast “The rise in mental health issues in the Family Courts and how can we help?”. Sir Andrew McFarlane, the President of the Family Division, will be speaking about some of the reforms that he will be putting in place to help reduce the stress and anxiety of those going through the family courts. He will be joined by Gillian Bishop, a consultant solicitor and a founder of Family Law in Partnership.

In 2017, Gillian and her colleagues, Felicity Shedden and Alex von der Heyde, launched FLiP Faculty. FLiP Faculty offers specialist training to help family practitioners understand the emotional and psychological impact for both clients and family law professionals of working in the field of family breakdown. The training offered by FLiP Faculty looks beyond the day to day delivery of legal services, focusing instead on developing insights into the factors affecting the relationship between the client and the family law professional.

FLiP Faculty offers a diploma in family law supervision – believed to be the first of its kind in the UK and elsewhere. The course will teach participants how to supervise and support other family practitioners to deal with stressful situations in the workplace with a view to promoting mental health well-being. The diploma is open to all professionals involved in the family justice system. To see the courses currently available, click here.

Family Law in Partnership and FLiP Faculty won the Excellence in Learning & Development Award 2018 at the Law Society Excellence Awards.

If you would like to attend the PSU’s talk on 31st October 2019, details can be found here.
